The Descent of the Holy Spirit - "That the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father has given Me commandments, so do I" (from the Holy Gospel, Jn. 14.23-31).
"Jesus Christ," says St. Alphonsus, "was given to us as Savior and Master." "Hence," continues the great Doctor, "He came on earth principally to teach us, not only by His words, but also by His own example, how we are to love God - our Supreme Good."
This day reveals to us that Powerful Love Divine Which worked in Him and will work in us - the Spirit of Truth: truth is the first in the order of embrace of the Supreme Infinite Good, "I will espouse thee to Me in Faith" (Hos. 2.20). It is the truth which tells us the real good we ought to desire and take delight in by possession; needless to say, it is also the truth that makes us see through the seeming and apparent good in evil to be teared up and discarded - hence the pains of sacrificing in true love: Divine Charity expurging from our hearts its petty 'toys' that fade into obsolescence and decrepitude, petty 'toys' that perish after they have wearied us. Such is the power of the blazing "charity of God poured forth into our hearts" (Rom. 5.5). "Send forth Your Light, that our hearts like Yours burn bright."
